Single-sided DVD discs have one side for recording. This side of the disc consists of layers of polycarbonate plastic substrate sandwiched together. A layer of organic dye is added and covered by a metal reflective layer. This layer of the DVD can be gold, silver, or silver alloy. The other side of the disc (dummy side) is polycarbonate substrate. Adhesive is used to bond the two halves of the DVD together into a single disc. The dummy side is often decorated or has an additional layer that accepts printing or labeling. The first step in DVD manufacturing is to use injection molding to fabricate the polycarbonate layers. After bonding the halves together, the dummy side is typically decorated by screen printing, digital printing, offset printing, or the application of printed labels. |
